Why Image File Size Matters

For websites, image size directly affects page load speed. Google's Core Web Vitals measure page speed and use it as a ranking factor. A page that loads in 1 second ranks better than one that loads in 4 seconds. Images are typically the largest files on any webpage — compressing them is usually the single most impactful optimization you can make.

For everyday use, sharing large images over WhatsApp or email is painfully slow on mobile data. Compressing before sharing reduces upload and download time significantly. For cloud storage, smaller files mean you fit more photos in the same storage quota.

How Image Compression Works

Lossy compression (used for JPG) removes image data that human eyes are least sensitive to — fine color variations in areas of similar color, high-frequency detail in complex textures. At 80-85% quality, the removed data is essentially imperceptible. At lower quality settings, compression artifacts become visible — the characteristic blocky patterns in heavily compressed JPGs.

Lossless compression (used for PNG) reorganizes data more efficiently without removing any information. It produces smaller files than uncompressed but larger than lossy compression. Use lossless when every pixel must be preserved exactly — logos, screenshots, graphics with text.

Quality Settings Guide

90-100%: Near-original quality. Use for professional photography archives or when you will be editing the image further. 80-85%: Excellent quality, significant size reduction. Ideal for websites, social media and most sharing. 70-75%: Good quality, major size reduction. Acceptable for thumbnails and small preview images. Below 70%: Visible artifacts. Only acceptable when file size is the absolute priority.

Privacy of Your Images
