Understanding Image Formats

JPG (JPEG) is the most widely used format for photographs and complex images. It uses lossy compression — some image data is discarded to achieve smaller file sizes. A high-quality JPG at 85-90% quality is nearly indistinguishable from the original while being 5-10 times smaller. JPG does not support transparency.

PNG uses lossless compression — no image data is discarded. PNG files are larger than JPG but maintain perfect quality. PNG supports transparency (alpha channel), making it essential for logos, icons and images that need to overlay other content. PNG is ideal for screenshots, graphics with text and design elements.

WEBP is Google's modern image format designed specifically for the web. It achieves 25-35% smaller file sizes than JPG at equivalent visual quality and also supports transparency like PNG. When to Use Each Format

Image Compression and Quality Settings

Our quality slider lets you fine-tune the compression level. For web use, 80-85% quality provides excellent visual results with significantly reduced file size. For print or archival purposes, use 90-95% to preserve maximum detail. Quality below 70% will show visible compression artifacts in photographs.

Privacy and Security

All image conversion happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API and JavaScript. Your images are never uploaded to our servers. This is particularly important for personal photos, business documents scanned as images, sensitive screenshots and any image containing private information.
