About This Tool
Every device connected to the internet has an IP address — a unique numerical label that identifies it on the network. Like a postal address for your device, it tells the internet where to deliver data you request. But an IP address also reveals geographic and organizational information that is useful for security, troubleshooting and understanding web traffic. Our IP Lookup tool gives you all this information instantly.
What an IP Address Actually Tells You
An IP address does not pinpoint your exact home address — it reveals the approximate city or region where your internet service provider is located, which may or may not correspond to your physical location. For most residential users, the IP geolocation is accurate to the city level. For mobile users, it might be less accurate. VPN users will see the location of the VPN server, not their actual location.
What IP lookup reliably reveals: the country, region and approximate city. The Internet Service Provider (ISP) or organization that owns that IP address range. Whether the IP belongs to a data center (suggesting VPN, hosting or proxy) or residential use. The time zone associated with the IP location.
Why People Look Up IP Addresses
Security is the most common reason. If you see unfamiliar login attempts in your account security logs, looking up the IP can tell you if the attempt came from a suspicious location like a foreign country you have never visited or a known data center associated with malicious activity.
Website owners analyze their server logs to understand where visitors come from. This helps with content localization decisions, server location optimization and identifying unusual traffic patterns.
Network administrators use IP lookup to troubleshoot connectivity issues, identify whether traffic is legitimate and trace the origin of suspicious network activity.
IPv4 vs IPv6
IPv4 addresses are the familiar format: four numbers separated by dots, like 192.168.1.1. There are about 4.3 billion possible IPv4 addresses — a number that seemed enormous in 1981 but has been exhausted by the explosion of internet-connected devices. IPv6 uses eight groups of four hexadecimal digits separated by colons (2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334), providing 340 undecillion possible addresses — enough for every atom on Earth to have its own IP. The internet is gradually transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6.

No. IP geolocation shows the approximate location of the internet service provider, not the user's exact address. For most residential connections, accuracy is at the city level — not street or house level. ISPs assign IP addresses from regional pools.
