Types of Dice and Their Uses
The standard six-sided die (D6) is the most universally recognized — used in Ludo, Monopoly, Snakes and Ladders, Yahtzee and countless other games. A roll of D6 gives equal probability to each number from 1 to 6.
D4 (four-sided, tetrahedron) is used in Dungeons and Dragons for small weapons like daggers. D8 (octahedron) appears in RPGs for medium weapons. D10 appears in many RPG systems and is used for percentile rolls when two D10s are combined. D12 is used for large weapons and certain game mechanics. D20 is iconic in tabletop RPGs — the critical die in Dungeons and Dragons for all skill checks, attack rolls and saving throws.
Multiple Dice Rolling
Rolling multiple dice simultaneously is common in many games. Yahtzee uses five D6 dice. Many RPG damage rolls use multiple dice — 2D6 means roll two six-sided dice and add them together. Probability Across Different Dice
A single D6 has equal probability for each result — one-sixth for each number from 1 to 6. Multiple dice create bell curve distributions — rolling 2D6, the result of 7 is most likely because it has the most combinations (1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2, 6+1). Extreme results like 2 or 12 are less likely. This is why game designers use multiple dice — the bell curve creates more predictable average outcomes while still allowing occasional extremes.
