About This Tool
Online shopping has made discount mathematics a daily life skill. Flipkart shows 65% off. Amazon has an additional 10% bank offer. You have a ₹200 coupon. What do you actually pay? Figuring this out mid-shopping is frustrating, especially with large numbers or multiple discounts. Our Discount Calculator does the math instantly.
How Retail Discounts Actually Work
The "original price" shown on shopping platforms is often the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) — a price the product was rarely if ever actually sold at. When you see "72% off," you are getting 72% off the MRP which may have been inflated. A better evaluation method is checking the final price against competitors and historical prices. A product at ₹999 that was ₹1,799 last week is a genuine deal. The same product at ₹999 for months with "70% off" in the listing just has an inflated MRP.
Multiple Discounts — The Math People Get Wrong
Multiple discounts do not add up. Product at ₹2,000 with 40% off gives ₹1,200. Additional 10% bank offer on ₹1,200 gives ₹1,080. Total saving is ₹920 = 46% — not 50% as you might think. The second discount applies to the already-discounted price.
Formula for total effective discount from two discounts: Total % = A + B - (A × B ÷ 100). For 40% and 10%: 40 + 10 - 4 = 46%.
GST on Discounted Products
In India, GST is calculated on the price after discount. If a product is ₹1,000 MRP with 30% discount and 18% GST: discounted price = ₹700, GST = 18% of ₹700 = ₹126, final price = ₹826. Some retailers show GST-inclusive prices with discount — always check whether the final price includes GST to avoid checkout surprise.

Final Price = Original Price × (1 - Discount% ÷ 100). Example: ₹2,000 with 30% off = ₹2,000 × 0.70 = ₹1,400. Or subtract: ₹2,000 - (30% of ₹2,000) = ₹1,400.
