About This Tool
Tipping in India is a relatively casual affair compared to Western countries but it is becoming more common — especially in restaurants, with food delivery drivers, at hotels and spas. Calculating a fair tip quickly without awkward mental arithmetic at the table is where our Tip Calculator comes in.
Tipping Culture in India
India does not have a rigid tipping culture like the United States where 18-20% is essentially mandatory. In India, tips are genuinely optional and appreciated — not required. A 10% tip at a restaurant is considered generous. Rounding up the bill or leaving loose change is common. For food delivery, Rs 20-50 per order is standard. At hotels, Rs 50-100 per service is customary.
When Tipping Is Appropriate
Restaurant service — 5% to 15% depending on quality of service. Fine dining with attentive service warrants more than a quick service restaurant. Food delivery — particularly meaningful since delivery partners often earn very little base pay. Bellhops and hotel staff — typically Rs 50-200 per service. Spa and salon — 10% of service cost is appreciated. Taxi and auto — rounding up to the nearest Rs 10 or Rs 50 is common.
Splitting Bills at Restaurants
Our calculator handles group bills cleanly — enter the total, choose a tip percentage and specify how many people are splitting. It calculates the exact per-person amount including tip. This eliminates the common awkward calculation at the restaurant table when everyone is trying to figure out what they owe.
Should You Always Tip?
Tip when service was good or better than expected. Tipping proportionally to service quality gives feedback to service providers. If service was genuinely poor, a smaller tip or none at all communicates that — though being direct with management is also worth considering. The key is that tipping in India is a choice that reflects genuine appreciation, not a mandatory surcharge.

5-10% is standard for good service. 15% for excellent service. Fine dining warrants more. Tipping is genuinely optional in India — it is a gesture of appreciation rather than a mandatory supplement to staff wages.
