About This Tool
Percentages are everywhere — discounts, GST, interest rates, exam scores, statistics and budget allocations. Most people can handle simple percentage calculations, but the moment someone asks "what percentage is 47 of 312?" — most of us reach for a calculator. Our Percentage Calculator handles all variations instantly.
The Three Types of Percentage Calculations
What is X% of Y? Most common — "What is 18% of ₹2,500?" This is how you calculate GST on a purchase, a tip on a restaurant bill or a discount. Formula: (X ÷ 100) × Y.
X is what percentage of Y? "47 is what percentage of 312?" This is how you calculate exam score percentage, savings rate or market share. Formula: (X ÷ Y) × 100.
X is Y% of what total? "₹450 is 18% of what amount?" This is how you find the original price before GST or the base salary when you know only the bonus percentage. Formula: X ÷ (Y ÷ 100).
Multiple Discounts — The Math People Get Wrong
Sale events like Big Billion Day often show multiple discounts — "40% off + additional 10%." These are not simply additive. 40% off ₹1,000 gives ₹600, then 10% off ₹600 gives ₹540. Actual total discount is 46%, not 50%. The second discount applies to the already-discounted price.
GST Calculations
To find base price from GST-inclusive amount: divide total by (1 + GST rate). For 18% GST: base price = Total ÷ 1.18. GST amount = Total - (Total ÷ 1.18). Example: ₹1,180 includes ₹1,000 base + ₹180 GST.

Formula: (Discount Amount ÷ Original Price) × 100. Example: ₹300 off ₹1,500 = (300 ÷ 1500) × 100 = 20% discount. Or multiply: 20% of ₹1,500 = (20 ÷ 100) × 1,500 = ₹300 discount.
