The imperial system grew organically from historical measurements — a foot was literally the length of a foot, a yard was a stride, an acre was how much land one person could plow in a day. The result is a chaotic collection of conversion factors. One mile equals 5280 feet. One gallon equals 8 pints. Common Conversions Indians Need

Kilometers to miles comes up constantly for Indians visiting the US or UK. A quick rule of thumb — multiply kilometers by 0.6 to get approximate miles. So 100 km is about 60 miles. For kilograms to pounds, multiply by 2.2. A 70 kg person weighs about 154 pounds. For Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 1.8 and add 32. Body temperature of 37 degrees Celsius equals 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

Temperature Is Different

Length and weight conversions are simple multiplications. Temperature is trickier because the scales do not start at the same zero point. Zero Celsius is 32 Fahrenheit — not zero Fahrenheit. The formula is: Fahrenheit equals Celsius multiplied by 9 divided by 5, then add 32. Scientists use Kelvin — absolute zero temperature — which is 273.15 degrees below Celsius.
