About This Tool

Exchange rates change every second. Whether you are planning an international trip, sending money to family abroad, shopping on foreign websites or making a business payment — knowing the current exchange rate is essential. And knowing the difference between the real rate and what your bank gives you could save you thousands.

Our Currency Converter shows you the mid-market rate — the real exchange rate that banks use when trading with each other. This is what you see on Google or XE.com.

The Mid-market Rate vs What Your Bank Gives You

When you exchange currency at a bank or money changer, you never get the mid-market rate. Banks add a markup of 2% to 5% as their profit. If the mid-market rate is ₹83 per dollar, your bank might give you ₹80 to ₹81 per dollar. On a ₹1 lakh transaction, that difference means you are losing ₹2,500 to ₹3,600 in real money.

What Moves Exchange Rates

Interest rates set by central banks — when RBI raises rates, foreign investors bring more money into India, strengthening the rupee. Inflation — countries with lower inflation tend to have stronger currencies. Political stability — uncertainty weakens a currency. India's trade deficit (importing more than exporting) puts constant downward pressure on the rupee.

Practical Tips for Currency Exchange

Never exchange at airports — they offer the worst rates, often 10-15% worse than mid-market. ATMs in destination countries usually offer better rates than airport counters. Apps like Wise offer excellent near-market rates for international transfers. For travel, multi-currency forex cards from HDFC or SBI loaded before departure are often the most cost-effective option.
